Professional Wrestlers Out To Get Students to Vote

(WTNH, Oct. 18, 2004 6:00 PM) _ If you haven't registered to vote yet you only have one day left to do it.

The deadline in Connecticut is tomorrow for people who want to cast their ballots in the upcoming presidential election.

It was big push. That's because the guys were very big. Professional wrestlers who usually known for body slams today were trying to get people to vote.

Chris says,"We know you all like to party."

These professional wrestlers aren't in tights, but because the election could be, they're encouraging Sacred Heart University students to jump into the political ring.

"You can't vote if you don't register."

This isn't just entertainment. Two people registered on the spot.

Paul Elumeeze says,"Like we can't make the decisions but like the only way to affect them is to decide who makes the decisions and that's what I did today, why I stepped up."

Connecticut is seeing a surge of new voters. From January to September 158 thousand have registered of that 25 percent are between the ages of 18-and 24.

"In the course of six hours we registered over 200 students."

Mapes says,"Okay all the information is here you'll get letters in the mail telling you where to vote."

No stage but still, hundreds had registered by noon time at West Haven City Hall.

Tuesday is the deadline.

"Even though there's a cycle every four years you get lots of lots of new people but I think because of Florida last time out people are saying every vote counts," says Joanne Mapes, registrar's office.

Memories of hanging chads, but students say the war in Iraq is getting them off the ropes to register.

"I guess this is my first step getting into the real world and I think it's great step."

All town halls across Connecticut will be open tomorrow until eight pm to register.
